Graffiti, Street Art, Urban Art: Terminological Problems and Generic Properties
2013
In the last ten years, street art has become a very important factor in the international art scene. It has become a precious object to buy and preserve, and yet there is considerable confusion about the generic properties and definition of street art in academic research. As a rightful part of popular culture and urban culture, street art is not pure and independent. It intertwines with different art forms and urban subcultures and nurtures spin-off production. Therefore it is quite hard to trace its borders. Street art is not graffiti. They are different visual expressions and even though they might share the same space, artists and techniques, they still produce visually and conceptually…
Art in the streets. Artification strategies for public space
2019
My essay focuses on the notion of artification, recently emerged in the philosophical and artistic debate. Some case studies show that “public wall paintings” work as an artifying strategy of public space both at a superficial and at a deep level. As regard to the first, a mere decorative effect is produced; while the second, by launching projects which require the coordination of several professional skills and social actors, produces a more radical transformation. The latter notion of artification is more significant than the former because it better expresses the educational value of art and its ability to produce improvement not only of urban areas – made aesthetically more enjoyable – …
Artificare lo spazio urbano. Lo sguardo “altro” di Danisinni
2019
Riscrivere la città: Inside Out Project e Pangrel, esperienze d’arte urbana a Palermo
2019
In 2018 Palermo, Italian Capital of Culture, has been the focus of many artistic experiences aimed at rewriting the urban environment and rethinking new forms of acceptance and integration. Inside Out Project e Pangrel, two different but integrable urban art models, discussed these issues with the aim of awakening the gaze of those who live and cross the city; so he/she can have new awareness and he/she can be able to act in space redesigned by these artistic interventions. The collective action of Inside Out Project wants to show that the differences and the contradictions between cultures are false and misleading: gaze, free from usual ways of seeing, and collective action produce new spa…
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Graffiti
2020
Emotions play an essential role in aesthetic and art experience. Graffiti is an example of urban visual communication, and it can also be understood as a form of art. Like other works of art, graffiti can evoke different aesthetic emotions in its audiences, such as pleasure, wonder, interest and pride but also disinterest, disappointment or embarrassment, and even anger and disgust—further impacting, for example, how they value this art form. However, few studies have explored what kinds of emotions people feel when they appraise graffiti. This chapter discusses emotions in graffiti using examples from participant interviews in the Purkutaide study. Interview quotes are assessed against the…
Collezioni visive negli spazi urbani: i luoghi della street art a Parigi | Visual Collections in Urban Spaces: the Sites of Street Art in Paris
2017
With its different forms, styles and ways of execution, Street Art is one of the visual culture languages that are now increasingly present in urban spaces. From a fleeting action that was often accomplished in an unauthorized manner, it has also established itself as an authorized practice, thus becoming an institutional instrument and a new way of visual redefinition of certain urban areas. The concept of Street Art is by no means unitary, but it could rather be seen as a complex and stratified communicative phenomenon that redefines itself by way of its specific modes of intervention in urban spaces. Starting from a series of observations and micro-analyses conducted in two urban areas o…
